1.1 - This weekend, U14-U18 athletes from throughout Atlantic Canada will descend upon Wentworth Valley to participate in the Roland Brunner Cup Race hosted by WSRC. This three-day series features Super G on Friday, Slalom on Saturday and Giant Slalom on Sunday.
Who was Roland Brunner?
Roland Brunner came to Nova Scotia in the mid to late 1960's as the Nova Scotia Provincial Ski coach. He was enticed to Nova Scotia by Kell Antoft who was very involved with Alpine Ski Nova Scotia at that time. It was Kell and Roland who developed the Nancy Green Ski League in Canada, which went on to be the foundation of many great Canadian skiers, and inspired participation in ski racing for youth across Canada. The skill levels that Roland and Kell developed are still used in national ski programs today.
Roland enjoyed coaching in Nova Scotia but he would go home to his native Switzerland for the summers, he lost his life in a cycling accident near his home.
A short while after his death, Kell Antoft, Peter Kunz and Brian Todd purchased the Roland Brunner trophy in his memory for annual competition at Wentworth and it has been raced for since about 1970.
Haven’t offered to help out yet? There is still time to sign-up!!…a few food items needed and we still need some volunteers…gate judges (no experience necessary we provide training), course slippers (require expert skiers & preferably former racers), and hand timers (we provide training).

5 - Volunteer Spotlight…
Meet Janice Faulkner, our Chief of Nourishment for the upcoming Brunner Race.
Janice is a qualified nutritionist and works for Chartwell and food services and catering company that delivers food to schools and universities across Nova Scotia. Janice is General Manager of the services to 7 institutions which represents about $6M annually in catering services….that’s a lot of hot lunches!!
We’ve not had anyone sign up to assist Janice with the Brunner food service, but Janice is non-plussed, feeding 60 people a hot lunch is child’s play – how many of us can say that??
For those who do not know, it is traditional for the host club to feed the army of volunteers and coaches who all work to make the ski race happen. The items in the food sign-up were designed by Janice: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b094ba4ad29a5f94-wsrc
Janice’s youngest child, Jenna, is one of our few U18 athletes. In the WSRC program since she was 6, Jenna is now in balancing ski racing, her high school cirriculum and a part-time job. Janice's son, Seth, now 20 and away at school, raced for a few years.
Janice can’t remember exactly how long she has been running the food service for the Brunner, but thinks it has been 4-5 years. This year, Janice is also serving on the WSRC Board of Directors as Secretary. Janice’s husband Blair is Chief of Finish Area Fencing and Set-up and has done so for the past three years.
Both Janice and Blair are examples of the types of supportive parent volunteers without which a ski race simply would not happen.
So, if you see Janice this weekend, be sure to say thank you(!!) while she is offering you a cup of coffee or lunch and feel free to lend a hand to help her clean-up.
Have a great weekend everyone and thanks to ALL our volunteers!!
