How can this be?  That we are on Newsletter #12?  It seems only yesterday we were checking you all in for the season….well, maybe not quite yesterday.

Thank you's...

So, let’s see….who to thank this week
  • Oh, just the 10 (!) people who donated chilli to the great chilli cook-off. (If you didn’t bother to come, you missed some serious fun.  What a great time in the clubhouse.) And …
  • The 60 (!) people who checked in for 12-hours of Wentworth.  This event was an unmitigated success based on participation alone.  A lot of people had a lot of fun; despite being a bit tired at training on Sunday.  (More communications to follow regarding prize pickups and outstanding pledges.)
  • Thanks to Aerobics First for our base station and the prizes.  Tom Johns the celebrity bootfitter and Tom Hill the celebrity ski tuner were total troopers manning the booth for 12 solid hours (!!)
  • Thanks to Lee Simms, Jennifer Havill, Duncan GIllis, Erika Jones, Roger Daya and Maurice Cramm for also working the base station.
So we move from Silent Auction to Ski-a-thon to the Roland Brunner Race….what a busy month (!!)

This Weekend….
  • The Roland Brunner Race….WSRC parents are rallying; food signups are almost complete and we’ve heard rumours of folks intending to help out who have not quite signed up yet.
  • Do your cold temp dance…mother nature while providing some gorgeous bluebird days this past week has not done much for the base….
  • Remember:  if the hill is open, programs are a GO.
  • Any parents from the younger age groups interested in learning about a race official position and shadowing during the race, contact Duncan Gillis , WSRC’s fantastic Volunteer Coordinator; text (506) 588-0355

Who was Roland Brunner?

Roland Brunner came to Nova Scotia in the mid to late 1960's as the Nova Scotia Provincial Ski coach. He was enticed to Nova Scotia by Kell Antoft who was very involved with Alpine Ski Nova Scotia at that time. It was Kell and Roland who developed the Nancy Green Ski League in Canada, which went on to be the foundation of many great Canadian skiers, and inspired participation in ski racing for youth across Canada. The skill levels that Roland and Kell developed are still used in national ski programs today.

Roland enjoyed coaching in Nova Scotia but he would go home to his native Switzerland for the summers, he lost his life in a cycling accident near his home.

A short while after his death, Kell Antoft, Peter Kunz and Brian Todd purchased the Roland Brunner trophy in his memory for annual competition at Wentworth.  Iit has been raced for since about 1970.
