To new member families:  Welcome to the Wentworth Ski Race Club!   And to returning member families:  Welcome back!

As most of you probably know, the WSRC is a not-for-profit organization run by a Volunteer Board of Directors.  Your board has been hard at work to improve the club and as we look forward to the 2018 ski season, here is an update about the non-skiing activities that have been on-going since our last run of 2017.

At the end of last season, we conducted our annual member survey.  We had 37 respondents, representing about 62% of our membership.  We encourage all members to complete this survey as the board does rely on the results to inform our priorities.

  • 84% of members view the program in a positive manner
  • 81% agree that athletes are receiving the expected benefit from the club
  • The main area identified for improvement is in coach-communication and adequate recreational events

In May, WSRC was recognized by Sport Nova Scotia and received the Association of the Year Award at the annual Support for Sport Event.  This was across all sports in the entire province.  We encourage you to read the many initiatives of WSRC which further the development of not only our athletes but ski racing in Atlantic Canada as well; this is located at the ends of the About Us page on our website:  http://wentworthracing.goalline.ca/page.php?page_id=92102

At our AGM in June, we voted in revised club bylaws including a revised organizational chart and welcomed three new Board Members this year:  Bruce Young (Secretary), Tim Hilton (Registrar), Krista Myles (Director, FIS) and Greg Zwicker (Director, Officials).   For a complete listing of Board Members and to see the new organizational chart, consult the “About Us” webpage.

There is now a new position of Director, Membership Development (Kate Lovett) whose mandate is member retention and attraction.  The Membership Development Subcommittee consists of 7 parent representatives; these are:  U8-Susie Cooke, U10-Suzanne Townsend & Mel Shaffner, U12-Kate Lovett, U14-Brad Hatfield, U16-Robin Thorsteinson & Tim Harmon, U18-Christine McNeil.  Contact information is found on our website under About Us / Parent Reps:  http://wentworthracing.goalline.ca/page.php?page_id=104534

Our immediate goal is member retention which is achieved through member satisfaction and engagement.  If you have any feedback related to this, we encourage you to reach out to any of our parent reps or other board members.  We recognize that many of us started in WSRC by having casual conversations either on the chairlift or off with other parents singing the praises of the positive impact of WSRC’s program on their child’s skiing.  It is our goal that every parent with a child in our program would pass this positive message along to any parents they might interact with.

We are continuing many of the initiatives from last year related to improved communication, affordability, and athlete retention/team spirit.

With respect to parent/coach communication, parents are encouraged to reach out to their coaches if they have any questions or concerns about their athlete’s training or development.  As well, our Program Coordinator, Gregor Byrne, is available to discuss any concerns you might have.

This year you will see a new start shack at the top of Headwall.  This could not have been possible without the contribution of Wayne Myles.

This year we have three sponsors:  Mapleleaf Homes, Royal Bank of Canada, and West Fish.  Thank you to all our sponsors and a special recognition of Westfish who are in their ninth year of Sponsorship.

To fund new initiatives while continuing to hold program fees, there is increased emphasis on fundraising, and leading into the season we have already completed our first fundraiser of the year the winetasting event held in November which was successful as a fundraiser and enjoyed by all who attended as a lead up to the season to re-connect with community of ski parents.  Our largest event of the year will be on January 28th, when we host Hopping Penguins at Ducky’s and encourage everyone to attend the dance and silent auction and bring your friends.

A key area for athlete retention is the establishment of a formalized FIS program which is being spearheaded by Krista Myles, .  This is open to interested U18 athletes.  This will involve collaboration with other U18 athletes in Atlantic Canada to attend FIS events and manage the costs to do so.  An active FIS program at Wentworth gives younger athletes something to aspire to.  If you have any questions about FIS, please do not hesitate to reach out to Krista.

Additional program enhancements include the introduction of a three-day program, 6 U10/U12 skill development days open to all interested athletes and Parent Race Camps offered on three Fridays.  The Parent Race Camp is meant to be fun and recreational and increase parent camaraderie, with no prior racing experience required.

The Volunteer Program was introduced last year and has been enhanced this year.  Our club and its events rely almost completely on volunteers and this volunteer program recognizes the efforts of those who volunteer.  We are still looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to run the Sign-Up Genius site and enhance communication with volunteers.

The 2017/18 season was a success with the club meeting its objectives from a program perspective.    We had strong showings in all race categories and lots of improvement at all skill levels.  We look forward to an even more successful season this year, both on the slopes and off.

Thank you for your support & Happy New Year!
